Electric vehicle (EV) – Future of Transport

Electric vehicle (EV) – Future of Transport

Electric vehicle (EV)

Working principle of EV

All-electric vehicles (EVs), also referred to as battery electric vehicles, have an electric motor instead of an internal combustion engine. The vehicle uses a large traction battery pack to power the electric motor and must be plugged in to a wall outlet or charging equipment, also called electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE). Because it runs on electricity, the vehicle emits no exhaust from a tailpipe and does not contain the typical liquid fuel components, such as a fuel pump, fuel line, or fuel tank.

Reasons to adopt EV

Back in 2019, the research company BloombergNEF made a grand prediction that by 2040, India would be one of the 4th largest passenger electric vehicle markets, with electric vehicle sales at 2.6 million. In its report, it further forecast that India would join Germany in numbers. China would stand at 14.6 million and the United States at 9.7 million. Moreover, EV sales in India may beat France, Japan, the UK, and Korea. The report foretells this result while simply analyzing the sales of electric four-wheeler.

High fuel prices

On a cost per distance basis, a fully electric car could cost you a quarter or fewer of what a conventional petrol or diesel car might. These savings quickly add up, you could save on each journey when driving an EV.

Low operating cost

Over a five-year period, which is well within the 8-year battery warranty period on the EV, most owners can be expected to cover 75,000 km or 15,000 km a year. Running the Nexon EV over this period should cost Rs 72,750 against the Rs 4.59 lakh needed for the petrol Nexon.

Low maintenance

Though electric vehicles may still cost more to purchase than their conventionally powered counterparts, they’re generally cheaper to keep running via affordable home charging. Electric vehicles also save their owners cash on an ongoing basis via lower long-term maintenance costs.

That’s because EVs eliminate over two-dozen mechanical components that would normally require periodic service. An EV owner avoids having to pay for things like tune-ups, oil changes, cooling system flushes, transmission servicing, and replacing the air filter, spark plugs and drive belts. Sources suggest electric vehicle owners spend roughly a third of what conventionally powered auto owners do for regular service.

Still, an EV is not maintenance free. All automakers insist owners follow a series of periodic checks and services in order to keep the vehicle’s warranty in effect. If you don’t follow the recommended schedule, your car may not be covered if it requires repairs.

Aside from tire rotation, replacing the cabin air filter and wiper blades, and topping off the washer fluid, much of this comes down to various mechanical inspections. Automakers advise, and appropriately so, that aside from simple tasks like checking the air pressure in the tires, topping off the windshield washer fluid, and perhaps changing the wiper blades, these procedures should be performed by a trained technician at the dealer’s service department.

Except for the initial investment, once you convert to an EV, overall costs are much lower than if you were to continue driving on petrol or diesel. An electric four-wheeler has few parts, is less complex, so the cost of maintenance is low.

Reduced noise pollution

Far more than other factors, you can enjoy a smooth, almost noise-free ride as you navigate your way through chockablock traffic. Apart from a slight whirring sound, an EV is a hummer with just the sounds of gravel, wind, road noise, and nothing else.

Zero emissions

With zero emissions on the road. EVs will assist decrease of CO2 and toxic greenhouse fumes.

Govt. subsidies

Under fame scheme-The incentives will be offered by the Government for electric buses, three-wheelers and four-wheelers to be used for commercial purposes.

New electrical vehicles available in the market

Electric two wheelers

The Indian Electric Vehicle Market was valued at USD 5 billion in 2020. The same is expected to reach USD 47 billion by 2026, registering a CAGR of above 44% during the forecast period (2021–2026). And with the boom of the Indian EV Industry, Electric Two-Wheeler Companies are also expected to grow at a fast pace in the upcoming years.

The entrance of Ola has already boosted the revolution in the 2-Wheeler EV segment and has increased the competition. Other auto companies are also expected to increase their 2-wheeler EV production to reduce the cost and get more EV bikes on Indian roads. In this article, we'll look into the top 2-wheeler Electric Companies in India.

Hero Electric is the largest player in the Electric two Wheeler (E2W) market in India, another big Auto manufacturers in this list is Bajaj Auto.

Electric four wheelers

There is a list of 14 popular electric cars available in India in the price range of Rs. 4.50 Lakh - Rs. 2.10 Crore. The most popular electric cars include BMW iX (Rs. 1.16 Crore), MG ZS EV (Rs. 21.49 Lakh) and Hyundai Kona Electric (Rs. 23.79 Lakh). The top car manufacturers that produce electric cars are BMWMGHyundaiAudiJaguar

However TATA motor have launched a competitive edge by firstly launching its Nexon, Tigor and Tiago EV variants.

Retrofitted EV kits for old cars

The cost of getting retrofitting kits starts around 5 lakhs, if you want a range of around 80 kms on a single charge and the same can go up to ₹7 lakhs for a drivable range of up to 150 kms.

The company will remove all the IC engine-related components and will retrofit the car with an all-electric drivetrain. The engine is replaced by an electric motor. Unlike the new electric vehicles, there is a need for some modifications to be done in the car in order to make it driveable. You can reach a top speed of nearly 80 kmph in such electric-retrofitted cars. The batteries in these cars can be charged in 5-6 hours and it will take around one hour with a fast charger.

Parts of a Retrofitted EV kit

Battery pack

In an electric drive vehicle, the auxiliary battery provides electricity to power vehicle accessories.

Smart BMS, IP67 grade water and dust protection, Robust LFP Cells (Performance), Low Insulation packaging, Active and Passive Balancing, Active Temperature Control, Modular Battery System.

battery

Charge port

The charge port allows the vehicle to connect to an external power supply in order to charge the traction battery pack.

DC/DC converter

This device converts higher-voltage DC power from the traction battery pack to the lower-voltage DC power needed to run vehicle accessories and recharge the auxiliary battery.

Electric traction motor

Using power from the traction battery pack, this motor drives the vehicle's wheels. Some vehicles use motor generators that perform both the drive and regeneration functions.

Onboard charger

Takes the incoming AC electricity supplied via the charge port and converts it to DC power for charging the traction battery. It also communicates with the charging equipment and monitors battery characteristics such as voltage, current, temperature, and state of charge while charging the pack.

Power train

The transmission transfers mechanical power from the electric traction motor to drive the wheels. This unit manages the flow of electrical energy delivered by the traction battery, controlling the speed of the electric traction motor and the torque it produces.

3 phase AC Induction & IPM motors (efficient, performance), High thermal endurance and structural safety (Safety), Compact e-axle design, High Endurance Magnet, Double Bearing Aluminium based axle.
